Samhain: The Celtic New Year

Samhain, aside from being the most major of the four (yes, four) Celtic high holy days, is my absolute favorite holiday of the Celtic year. I suppose that's to be expected, but it truly is. It is a day of reflection and meditation on our past year, and our ancestors, to be sure, not one of, as the greeting card and movie industries paint, horror and dread; it is anything but. When death comes into it at all, it is in an honoring for our lost friends, and loved ones, and above all, the ancient ancestors to whom we owe our modern world. Yes, indeed, we stand on the backs of giants; and I do indeed believe that those who forget their history are doomed to repeat it.

But in point of fact, I've found in the recent past that the day of Samhain tends to brighten my spirits, more than any other day of the year. I have a theory on that, but I'll leave that to your imagination; it is nothing morbid or freaky, I assure you. It is more about... the feeling of connectedness, it can leave in its wake.

At any rate, I am sure there are better explanations out there than what I can give, so for your reading pleasure, I've culled the following pages. Enjoy!
